While the previous answer links you to a resource for finding fax numbers if you don’t know the number, it won’t do you much good for the other way around unless you click on that reverse directory button which goes from the same database as every other reverse directory does.
Basically, it’s up to the company whether they publish their fax number in the phone book or not. Many do not as there are fax marketers who just love to send you hundreds of junk faxes a day about stock tips, cheap vacations and refurb office supplies; I know, I get them every day! If they choose to list their number, any reverse directory will work, such as http://www.whitepages.com/9900/reverse_phone
If they don’t, there’s a chance they may list it on their website. If so, this could come up in a typical Google search http://www.google.com
Just search for the number a few different ways, like (555) 555-5555 or 555-555-5555 or 1-555-555-5555
This may yield results from forums containing posts from other job seekers who could let you know who the mystery employer is.
A lot of companies who are hunting for employees want to stay anonymous until they deem you to be a potential candidate so don’t be surprised if you can’t find out who they are without them contacting you back first.
